CEP Overview
Ms. LaGala:
· iPlan has been down so can’t do what we planned, but we can look at the data we have from this year and last year to compare and see where we are
Ms. Terranova:
· Used last year’s as a guide to interpret and analyze the data we have to see where we are and where we are going
· Priority 1:
· Reading K-5 61% on or above; focus on comprehension in 3-5 and foundational skills K-2
· Use this as a similar goal? Smart Goal increase 4% from 61-65%
· These numbers are based on end of year, so beginning and middle year data looks different
· Using variety of data sources to analyze: report card data from second marking periods indicates 71% of students are meeting grade level standards; HMH data using weekly assessments show 65% on or above (this uses different grading system than D20)
Ms. Racioppo: At the principal conference Ms. Sainato attended today Dr. Pretto talked about goals so when we debrief, we will have more information, and things may change but we are looking at all the data we have
Ms. Terranova: Collecting ideas on setting goals for the coming year—change or keep what we have?
Ms. LaGala: iReady data will give us more information but is there anything you notive about this data? We see K-2 makes the biggest progress
Ms. Terranova: Always thinking how can we improve and with the introduction of OG we see progress especially now with year two
Ms. Racioppo: You can see the progress with SWD groups and they have the OG instruction
Ms. Terranova: Also the push for more sustained reading time to increase stamina and improve comprehension and fluency; have the readers are leaders initiative, using more engaging texts and personal interest for students to read more
· Priority 2:
· Last year looked at survey which provides good information but we do not have this year’s results in
· Also looked at OORS data; number of level 3 infractions down as we have focused on PD, learning, and the Dean has really helped with student and restorative justice
· Ms. Bonomolo analyzed the report card data and there were 52% of students receiving level 3 on the Academic and behavior section
Ms. LaGala:
· Also had de-escalation training that went really well for teachers to learn new strategies to help and Ms. Bonomolo went to a PD last week about SEL
· OORS reports need to be filled out any time there is an incident
· Different infractions are under different codes
· A24 i.e: shoving, pushing—118 incidents, 6.82%
· A07 i.e. more aggressive—32 incidents, 16.4%
· A33 i.e. risk of minor injury—20 incidents, 10.3%
· A18 i.e inappropriate or unwanted physical touch on private part—13 incidents, 6.7%
· A06 i.e. disrupts education process—11 incidents, 5.67%
Noor Elferri: Serious infractions? Weapons?
Ms. LaGala: Can be something like scissors but can cover more serious things as well
Bonny Tan: Any social media issues that are addressed?
Ms. LaGala: Yes, A36 covers social media, bullying, cyber bullying. We try to address and teach to help with future incidents and as they get older
Priority 3:
· iReady data
· Gaining more conceptual knowledge not just procedural; understanding the why and how for both teachers and students
· Another issue is students have trouble reading and understanding the word problems to know what to do and how to solve the problem
· Over scaffolded lessons as well—need productive struggle
· Brought back core collaborative with Lori Cook who is working with teachers for conceptual understanding and fluency
Ms. Terranova:
· Lessons start and focus on word problems based on the lesson and using the 3 read protocol; first read to understand the story, second to know what the numbers represent and the third read for the strategy
· Use of manipulatives to build what they see and what they are trying to solve, then draw
· This supports productive struggle as the teacher is observing and seeing what the students are doing before teaching to it; observing different strategies students are using then showcasing them to highlight the concept being taught or to use it to teach a new strategy rather than just teaching it procedurally
· Goal for this priority which focuses on math, increase by 8%, 57%-65%
· Beginning of the year iReady: 18%
· Middle of the year iReady: 36%
· Report card data shows for second marking period 84% on grade level
· iReady based student individualized plan so can have them working on concepts more advanced
· Need to look at the data wholistically
· Asking if we should continue focusing on Math for priority 3
Ms. LaGala: Should we continue using Math and iReady data for priority 3?
Ms. Cagliostro: I think we should keep it because this is a way to have quantifiable data we can analyze and look for trends for the CEP
Bonny Tan: Is there a way to have more work assigned to students outside of workbooks?
Ms. LaGala: Great thinking; Laura always says that Eureka is your tool but the standards are the guide so next year we can look into giving different work
Ms. Bonomolo: Conceptual understanding is where we want to get students and standards based is the focus and using Eureka to do that
Bonny Tan: Concepts can be forgotten; is there a way to reinforce old concepts?
Ms. Bonomolo: Can do workshops for parents to help learn the concepts and the way students are learning
Bonny Tan: Love that and would love to have classroom teachers apart of that especially during curriculum night. Curriculum night is great but could add more of this learning so parents know ahead
Ms. Bonomolo: More parent workshops, parent engagement to work on our goals
Ms. Sainato: Jennifer Lee and I were talking about this and brought up more parent engagement in learning and not just experiences
Ms. LaGala:
Priority 4
· Discussion and conversations in classrooms
· Root cause—lack of explicit understanding of discussion protocols
· Report cards analyzed based on the listening and speaking section
Ms. Terranova: 77% at or above at mid-year; goes hand in hand with math and having students do more explaining of their thinking
Ms. LaGala: Also ELL population contributes to this data; working on giving students that language and the vocabulary to better communicate
Priority 5 is being removed; revised to reflect changes with new chancellor
Engagement in all priorities:
P1 literacy
P2 Math
P3 Safety in Schools
P4 College/Career Readiness
P5 Attendance
Ms. Terranova:
